THE AGM OF THE DUBLIN BRANCH WILL BE HELD ON THURSDAY, 4TH MAY, IN THE EDUCATION CENTRE, DRUMCONDRA, AT 7.30PM. AS USUAL, THE AGM WILL BE FOLLOWED BY A LECTURE.
SPEAKER: DR. ANN O’SHEA, DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS AND STATISTICS, MAYNOOTH UNIVERSITY
Abstract: Ann writes: "An important aim of most mathematics teaching is to develop students' conceptual understanding. However, it is not easy to define this type of understanding. In this talk, I will consider attempts at coming up with such a definition and how these attempts can help us to study how learning takes place. I will use data from joint research projects with researchers in Ireland, the UK and Sweden. Examples will be drawn from the second-level curriculum.”
