Support for mathematics education in Tanzania
As agreed at the recent Branch AGM, and in the name of Fr. Steen who died in 2015, a grant of €500 was made to buy maths textbooks for Isimila Secondary school, Tanzania. The books were handed over by Patricia Lewis, who previously lived and worked in Tanzania, when she visited the school in Summer 2016.
'Isimila Secondary School is a large coeducational rural school 30km south of the town of Iringa which is located in The Southern Highlands of Tanzania. Most students in the school are studying towards GCSE exams but in recent years they have also taken in girls for Alevel. Up till now these girls have not had any access to Maths textbooks. Under the guidance of Frank Mahenge, Headmaster and formerly a Maths teacher and colleague in Mkwawa Secondary School, 25 Alevel text books were purchased. The books were received very enthusiastically by both the teachers and the students and should have a considerable impact on their learning.' Patricia Lewis
50th Anniversary Grant from the Dublin Branch
To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Irish Maths Teachers Association, we established a grant for classroom teachers to purchase materials which would aid in their students' learning. The grants were awarded and the materials supplied to the selected schools in Spring 2015. We would like to thank Sligo Graphics for their assistance in sourcing materials and offering the Dublin Branch a discount on equipment.
